Hull Sounding
Sounding a hull will reveal voids in the lay up, stringers, frames, bulkheads, and condition of the material in a laminated or delaminated core. Along with a moisture meter, it allows me to nondestructively determine the condition of the laminate beneath the shiny gel coat.
The most valuable use of sounding is on structural portions of the vessel; stringers, frames, bulkheads, transoms and decks. On a severely degraded core, the sound is unmistakable, like banging a drum. On a less severe condition, a trained surveyor can hear and feel the bounce of the hammer against the laminate.
